The 16-18 age group falls directly into the category of ‘Unawares’. They represent a demographic that rarely encounters conversations about organ donation. For many, the topic lacks salience; it isn’t top of mind and is often dismissed as something to think about later in life. Bringing organ donation education into schools offers an opportunity to raise awareness at a pivotal moment in their development. 

 

This age group is particularly significant as they are on the cusp of getting their driver’s licences - a common point of misunderstanding regarding organ donor registration. Many young people mistakenly assume that donor registration happens automatically when they obtain their licence. Addressing this misconception early helps combat the myth before it takes hold and aligns the message with an aspect of life that is already at the forefront of their minds. 

 

Our primary audience targeting will focus on direct engagement through schools, complemented by leveraging social media platforms like TikTok to amplify short-form messaging and foster organic interaction.

 

To effectively reach this audience, our approach must be authentic, relatable, and empowering while leveraging personal stories, visual engagement, and clear takeaways.

Teens value honesty and transparency. We need to deliver the organ donation message straightforwardly, without trying to "speak their language" in a way that feels forced. Respect their intelligence and autonomy to connect with them effectively.

 

  • Be Relatable and Relevant

The content should reflect the world of young people, including references to current trends in culture, technology, and social media. By showing how organ donation relates to their lives - whether it’s about making a difference, helping others, or planning for the future - we can make the topic feel more relevant and engaging.

 

  • Focus on Empowerment, Not Instruction

Instead of telling teens what to do, we should invite them to explore the concept of organ donation. Present questions and challenges that encourage self-reflection and critical thinking, allowing them to take ownership of their decisions and fostering a sense of autonomy.

Scripts and materials developed in collaboration with the OTA will ensure that these efforts are effective, impactful, and aligned with the broader educational strategy.
