During DonateLife Week, radio host Mark Levy sat down with DonateLife NSW’s Director of Nursing, Juliana Celcer, and Forever Grateful's very own Jayden Cummins, to discuss the urgent need for more Australians to register as organ donors. The conversation highlighted the stark reality: while many people say they support donation, registrations are declining, with NSW seeing an 11% drop last year. Juliana explained that organ donation is rare - only two in 100 hospital deaths are even eligible - making every registration critical. Families are far more likely to honour the wishes of loved ones if they know about them in advance, which is why registration and conversation go hand in hand.
Jayden shared his personal journey from a sudden flu that left him with only 48 hours to live, through 436 days supported by an artificial heart, to finally receiving a life-saving transplant. He spoke candidly about the emotional paradox of waiting for a donor - balancing hope with the awareness of another family’s tragedy. His gratitude to his donor family and the medical teams at St Vincent’s Hospital was matched by a powerful call for Australians to act. As Juliana reminded listeners, one donor can save up to seven lives. The interview closed with a clear message: have the conversation, register, and give the gift of life.
